Dainty Obsessions

{Real Wedding} Tamara + Derrick

This beautiful Custer State Park wedding at Sylvan Lake proves that sometimes nature is the best décor you could ask for.

From the bride…

Derrick and I wanted a very laid back wedding day and wanted the guests to enjoy themselves as well as the beauty of the Black Hills. We had planned a hike up Harney Peak and rock climbing in the needles the day prior to the wedding for any guests that wanted to take part. People had a great time and it was a good ‘ice breaker’ before the actual wedding day!

The day of the wedding was so windy and the coldest day of the whole week (in the 50s). Now what we expected, but we made the best of it and went ahead as planned with having the ceremony outside on the lake lawn at Sylvan Lake.

My dress was also the dress that my grandmother and mother had worn with some alterations to its original form. It is 64 years old. I also wore a headpiece worn by them. The necklace is also a family heirloom. It has been worn by my great-grandmother, grandmother, all of my aunts, my sister, and my female cousins on their wedding days. It was an honor to wear all of these pieces. When my grandmother saw me in the dress it was an amazing and emotional moment. I still tear up thinking about it!

The ceremony was officiated by my childhood pastor. It was a short ceremony including readings from scripture, singing of a hymn by guests, a solo by my aunt, and a rope-tying ceremony. We wanted to symbolize our ‘tying the knot’ by tying a common knot used in rock climbing, as this was the activity that brought us together. Our décor was simple and included wildflowers in blue mason jars, which sat atop a tree root surrounded by a couple of tea lights. The mason jars were old jellying jars that originally belonged to Tammy’s great grandmother and were passed down over the years. Large bulb garden lights were strung from the ceiling of the auditorium to create a cozy, rustic feel.

The reception was so fun! We had a receiving line to greet guests on arrival, ate a delicious buffet dinner, heard speeches from our close friends and family, snuck off for great picture opportunities, and danced the night away. We had the best day!
