Jenny and Gerick from Acowsay Cinema are a simple, relaxed couple, and that’s exactly what we love about this shoot. Spending the shoot doing with they love (camping and hiking) made for a natural, fun engagement session that made us want to join them and pour a coffee cup of craft beer. NylonSaddle Photography was on the journey at Lake Maria in Monicello, MN, making it not the standard two hour session, but a weekend of fall fun. We chatted with the couple about their experience and upcoming nuptials.
How did you prepare for your engagement session?
Jenny: Other than coordinating our clothes, nothing out of the ordinary for a regular camping/hiking outing. We wanted to keep it simple, keep it “us.” That’s how we landed on camping in the first place. We feel very in our element when we are outdoors. Lake Maria State Park is a place where we have had lots of great memories camping with friends in the past. It is somewhere close to our hearts and we wanted to share that feeling through out pictures. We also wanted to share that with our new friends, our photographer, Nicole and her boyfriend Terry. Gerick also wanted to be able to crack a beer; it was perfect.
What process did you go through to pick out your outfits and why did you choose the certain pieces?
Jenny: We selected the pieces that we each felt comfortable wearing and a lot of the pieces we already had in our closet. Flannels are a bit of a staple in our house. I did make a quick run to H&M to grab a few “less loved” items that would look fresh and new in the images. Gerick grabbed his favorite hat and sweater and may or may not have stolen the red flannel from me. Everything selected fit our style and not the other way around, which was a must. They also fit around our favorite season, fall.
What was the day like for both of you?
Jenny: Per usual Gerick packed up the camping gear while I putzed around. We made a quick stop to pick up Gerick’s family dog, Brogan (“The Bro”) and we made our way to the campsite. It was a typical day of camping for us, even with the camera in our face. Gerick usually has a camera glued to his hand when we go camping. However, even if I wasn’t used to that, Nicole made me feel completely at ease. A lot of the shoots were candid, which allowed us to feel comfortable in our own skin and translated beautifully into the images.
Gerick: I didn’t have too much time to worry about the photos because I was worried about making sure we had all of our camping stuff, food prepared, and gas in the car to get us to the park. We unpacked, set-up our tents, cracked a beer, and by that time we were already laughing and having fun. I am actually kind of a ham when it comes to photos, and had no problems jumping in front of the camera because I was already so excited to see the finished photos. Nicole brought her 35 mm and shot a roll of film during the shoot, which did an incredible job of growing my excitement for the next week as we waited for the finished photos.
Any tips for those who are going to have their engagement session?
Jenny: Figure out your style. Your clothes, your poses, your location, your photographer should all fall in line with your style. Doing this will allow you to feel comfortable and that will translate into the pictures. Make choices for your engagement pictures that fit you, not the other way around. Don’t pick a photographer that can’t stop talking. The best photographers are patient, kind, and paying attention to you as a couple.
What is your theme/colors and where will your wedding be?
Jenny: We will be getting married in the fall of 2017 in Shafer, MN at the Bloom Lake Barn. A beautiful white barn with blue trim, a very Scandinavian and woodsy feel. We plan to be married outside under their oak tree with mix and match wedding party of dusty blues, lavenders, and mints hues.
What is your favorite part about each other?
Jenny: Love is a silly thing. One day you love something about a person, the next it can drive you crazy. But my ultimate, favorite, never-gonna-stop-loving trait about Gerick is how he can make me laugh. Whether it was something he did on accident, a classic “dad joke” or just him being his ridiculous self, he can always get me laughing. We “belly laugh” a lot and it keeps us happy, young and completely in love with one another.
Gerick: Sometimes looking at Jenny is like looking at a mirror. She can be frustrating, hilarious, and incredibly loving all at the same time, and honestly what I love most about her is her uniqueness. I love how we are equally devoted to being better versions of ourselves every day and how we are always quick to resolve a fight so that we can go back to laughing with each other. Jenny is truly the perfect match for me.
What has helped with the planning process?
Jenny: We are immersed in the wedding world with work. That has been insanely helpful. Gerick and I have seen a lot (and I mean a lot) of weddings and that helps so much to see what we love, what we dislike, and what is and is not necessary for our wedding.
In the wedding industry we also know a lot of the vendors personally after working with them. However, saying we know our florist, our baker, or our photographer through work almost seems like a lie, they are our friends. And those friends have been incredibly helpful with ideas and suggestions.
We are also ridiculously organized people. We live and die around our Google calendars and reminders. It keeps us on track and make sure we are both on the same page in terms of payments, meetings and wedding deadlines.
What are you most excited for in regards to your wedding day?
Jenny: I’m so excited to see all of our favorite people in one place. Our entire wedding party, besides my cousin and personal attendant, live in other states; Iowa, Maine, Colorado, Montana, Texas, Washington, and Alaska. So getting all these people together will feel like a giant bubble of love around me and Gerick. I am also insanely excited to wear my gown from The White Room. I cannot wait to put that dress on…and giant bib since I’m known for spilling on myself.
Gerick: I am excited to dance my ass off. We have an incredible group of friends and family that we really don’t get to see enough and I can not wait to see them all in one place busting moves. I can already see myself looking at the photos and cell phone video, crying like a baby for years to come, thinking that I am just the luckiest guy on the whole damn planet.
